Cleaning your oven on a regular basis can help to maintain its efficiency for years – but this task can often be time-consuming and a real chore. Why not take advantage of these oven cleaning hacks to ensure your appliance doesn’t become smelly, unhygienic, and a potential fire hazard…
Mix Repairs Presents The Most Helpful Oven Cleaning Hacks
Take the natural approach
If you don’t want to use any chemicals you can try an easy lemon cleaning tip by simply cutting five lemons in half and squeezing the juice into a baking tray – place the lemon skins into the tray as well.
Put in a 250◦C oven for about half an hour letting the moisture from the lemons operate a steam clean process as they heat up. After your oven has cooled down you can wipe it out with a clean, damp cloth.
Operate the self-clean function
If you’ve got the option of using a self-clean process you’ll need to open the window to allow sufficient ventilation as the oven temperature will be very high. The majority of ovens will take between two to four hours to do a full clean – you’ll need to stay at home to monitor the procedure.
Mix some baking soda
Make up a solution of 1⁄2 a cup of baking soda and a few tablespoons of water to make a paste – wear gloves to spread the mixture throughout the interior, avoiding the heating elements. Leave it for a minimum of 12 hours and overnight preferably.
Take a damp clean cloth and wipe of the greasy, brown residue. If you need extra power spray on white vinegar which reacts to the baking soda and bubbles as it loosens grime. Wipe down with fresh water until the oven is clean.
Use the bathtub
Place an old towel in the bottom of the bath to protect it from scratches and the detergent. Put the dirty oven racks on top and then fill the bath with the hottest water possible. Add a cup of laundry detergent dissolved in hot water and pour into the bath.
Leave for at least six hours – overnight if you can as this allows the grease and burned on residues to loosen. The following day you can drain the water and wipe the racks clean and dry before putting them back. If you’ve got an old toothbrush you can aid the cleaning process with a little scrubbing!
Clean with a dishwasher tablet
A dishwasher tablet makes a great cleaning option for oven doors – dip the end of the tablet in water and use like an eraser over the greasy areas. Leave it for a full five minutes before wiping any residue off with a damp cloth.
