When your dishwasher won’t start there may be a simple explanation – and you can fix it yourself. With the help of the manufacturer’s manual, you’ll be able to locate the parts in question and do some troubleshooting. Take a look at a few reasons why your dishwasher won’t turn on…
Dishwasher Repair Problem Resolving Tips by Mix Repairs London
Is the appliance getting power?
The first thing to check is if the machine is actually plugged in – and then if the power switch is turned on. You can then turn the power off, unplug and check the fuses. Make sure the switch hasn’t tripped the electricity – if it has then reset the breaker. As the dishwasher is normally wired directly into your home if you have any concerns you’ll need to contact an expert.
Has the door latch been damaged?
The door latch holds the door closed during the wash cycle to stop any water leakage – and the door latch switch supplies power to the dishwasher controls. When the door doesn’t close properly, or the switches are defective then the power source is affected and the dishwasher won’t start.
You can find the door latch assembly at the top of the door, behind the inner panel – you’ll have to take out the screws to separate the inner and outer door. By manually inserting the catch into the latch assembly you’ll be able to see if the door catch will activate. If the switches are working you can check for continuity with a multimeter – switch off the power before doing any repair work.
Is the timer working?
If your dishwasher has a manual timer you’ll hear a click each time the power is supplied in sequence with the cycles – it’s located behind the control panel at the top front of the machine. After disconnecting the dishwasher you can find the timer contacts for the motor circuit and inlet valve and check with your multimeter.
If your control panel is electrical you’ll need to access the main circuit board to find any faults, but you may need a qualified electrician to fix any issues here.

Is the dishwasher filling but won’t start?
This could be a problem with the motor pump – there could be an obstruction. Remove the pump cover and the filter assembly and you should be able to see anything that’s preventing the pump or motor from working properly.
Is the selector switch set properly?
You choose the type of cycle you want your dishwasher to perform by using the selector switch – if this isn’t properly connected or the button selection isn’t all the way down the dishwasher may not start. Check that more than one button hasn’t been pressed at the same time, or that the switch isn’t stuck between settings.
You can unplug the machine and remove the panel on the inside door to locate the selector switch, and use your multimeter to check the contact continuity.
